Hells of Beppu - Umi Jigoku

Bus ride to Yufuin

Northern Kyushu Itinerary

The main reason for going to Yufuin is the Floral Village. However, upon researching food became the main reason. hahaha!

BOOK HERE:

Ultimate Fukuoka Tour from Sunrise to Sunset

Yufuin Floral Village is one of the most "instagrammable" spots in Yufuin as we were researching on Instagram. We wanted to visit it early to beat the crowd but since we didn't have train tickets, we had no choice but to put Yufuin as the last place on our itinerary that day.

The wind was cold but it was sunny... the reason why both of us were sunburned just after two days of walking around.

The Floral Village is actually just small "houses" selling stuff... there's an owl zoo but we didn't bother entering.

Pictures were supposed to look nice at this area but there were too many people and the sun was too bright.

Someone told me that she was envious that our pictures in Japan didn't have a lot of people in it... well, I didn't show her pictures from Yufuin that's why. :))

The main point is to take a picture walking in this village and Mt. Yufu.

At that point, we decided to walk to Kinrin lake because it was getting more and more crowded. The "Floral Village" was small and in reality it's just an alley.

Following Google map, it didn't take us a long time to get to the lake. When you come here in the morning, you'll be able to see mist coming out from the lake. It was said that fog occurs because this lake is fed by both hot and cold spring.

Unless you're entering the musuems and onsens around this place, there isn't anything to do on this side of Yufuin aside from walking and picture taking but I prefer to stay here than in the floral village.

Should look a lot more beautiful during autumn because of the trees surrounding it.

Kinrin lake is a small lake but it looks different depending on which side you're viewing it from.

This is used to clean yourself (hands and mouth) before entering the shinto shrine.

This is a small shrine at the other end of the lake. This Shinto shrine is called Tenso shrin and it marks the location where the cold water spring is located.

Early moonrise at Yufuin. <3

Sea Hell (Umi Jigoku)

Post link: here.

From the Sea Hell, we walked back to the bus station and were thinking of riding the bus back to the Beppu JR station and from there take the train to Yufuin.

However, taking the time into consideration we decided to just wait for the bus that will take us directly to Yufuin rather than doing our original plan.

BOOK YOUR BEPPU TICKETS HERE.

In all fairness to Japan, if money is not an option, travelling there is very convenient since there's a bus stop and a train station near all tourist spots. Japan is wide but it is well-connected which you'll appreciate especially if the places you're thinking of going are far from each other.

Not even once did I buy something from the vending machine. ahahaha! Budget travel is bringing your own water with you so you wouldn't need to buy. hahaha! Kk. Not bad. Kung nakaabot naman na ng Japan kaka-budget eh.

If we had more time and money, riding the Beppu ropeway would've been a great idea. lol. haha!

It was, once again, a very scenic ride... or probably because we were passing through mountain ranges. <3

After about an hour, we reached Yufuin.

The bus ride from Beppu to Yufuin was 900 Yen. Taking the bus+JR train was cheaper but we couldn't afford to get lost or spend more time waiting since we were running out of time.. we figured 900 is a good deal. The view was nice afterall.

You can barely see people outside since all were walking along the alleys leading to the Yufuin English Village. It is the most congested place out of all the places we visited while in Japan.

This place was the reason why we wanted to start early... we wanted to take photos here with no people in the background but it was around3 PM when we arrived so it was obviously impossible. :))

First Time in Japan: Northern Kyushu Itinerary, Expenses and Travel Tips (From Hakata in Fukuoka)

Doon tayo sa may Japanese characters para mukhang nasa Japan talaga... :))

We didn't know that Yufuin No Mori (the train that goes to Yufuin) is an all-reserved train. It was only when we were forming our line did we realize that we're not gonna be able to ride the train for we need a reservation. We went down to the ticket counter only to find out that all the trips are fullybooked for the next three days already.

We were confused for a bit since we didn't have any plan B. hahahaha! After a little bit of thinking, we decided to just do our first day backwards meaning we'll be going to Beppu first.

For this train, we didn't need any reservations. We just rode the train that passed through a very scenic area of Japan especially the coastal part in Kitakyushu.

The travel time from Hakata Station was around two hours. The seats were comfortable so it didn't matter.

If you'll notice the sign on the right side "JR PASS GATE," that's where you'll be walking and showing your pass every time you enter or leave the train.

Outside the station, the bus that will take you to Beppu stops but it was hard for us to navigate (since it was our first day) so we decided to walk to the terminal instead of waiting at a bus stop. We had a pocket wifi with us that time so locating places/where we were was easy.

The bus from the station to the bus stop near the Hells of Beppu was 340 Yen.

There are a total of eight jigokus in Beppu. No wonder it is called the Onsen town.
We didn't have enough time that day so we chose one which we liked most from the brochure that they give and it is called UMI JIGOKU or SEA HELL. Each Jigoku costs 400 Yen but if you want to go to all hells then you have the option to buy the 2,000 Yen ticket admission for all.

As we were walking, we saw smoke coming from the left side which we decided to check out. I am not sure what this is but there's an area for a foot bath around here.

The reason why this one is called SEA HELL is because of its beautiful aquamarine shade that looks like ocean water.

If you have enough time, I suggest that you stay here for 30 minutes to an hour so you can walk around the facility. I don't know where these Tori gates lead to 'cause we just walked around the sea hell and left. hahaha! Our day started late and the travel time is bit long so we didn't have enough time.

It's a beautiful place though. I'm glad that even if it's far from Fukuoka, we decided to include it in our itinerary.

The only way go get back to the gate after looking at the Sea Hell is to pass through this area where you can buy lots of souvenirs from Beppu.

First Time in Japan: Northern Kyushu Itinerary, Expenses and Travel Tips (From Hakata in Fukuoka)

We were a week early for the full bloom but on our last day, we saw several "early bloomers" in Hakata that bid us a beautiful goodbye.

We wanted to try the Yatai Stalls the night before which are in this area but the long lines made us look for other restaurants in the area. The only thing we accomplished by going there that night was seeing this big white sakura tree which flowers were almost all in full bloom.

This is the most "Japanese style" of all our posted photos in Japan, tbh. Some people even believed that we were really in Amsterdam when we posted the pictures from Huis Ten Bosch.

Day
Night

I remembered that in one of the parks that we visited in Macau, there were some plants that looked like cherry blossoms. A year later, we were able to travel to Japan for the real cherry blossoms! <3

See you again next year, Japan!!! <3 I fell inlove with you. I fell inlove with Spring :))

We had more time so we continued walking and saw this street lined with smaller sakura trees. I'm not sure if this variety is just small or the trees are young. But still, it's a sakura-lined street right there and all of the trees are blooming!

Although it's like a gamble, I think going to Japan during the "early bloom" phase is best especially for people who dislike huge crowd *ehem*

I never shopped a lot before and the only item that I was thinking of purchasing was a backpack from Anello but shopping in Japan was just too much fun and some items were cheaper than their price here in the Philippines... and so I let Uniqlo, Anello, Royce, and other matcha products tempt me... magi-ipon na lang ulit ako pag babalik na. hahaha!

Thank you for being our home for a week, Fukuoka!!!! <3

Departure and Royce Chocolate link: here.
